Bravery of Bakehouse

With the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia, businesses have inevitably been impacted but are reluctant to close doors. The bakery sector is no expectation with a Kyiv bakery, called Bakehouse, remaining open.

Following new regulations in the country, the bakeries limited funds and the continuing expenditure to employees, the business has moved their strategy from growth and success to crisis mode.

In true crisis fashion, between the 800 vendors that Bakehouse have worked with previously, they have been kind enough to receive many charitable supports who have donated materials for humanitarian aid. Many people throughout the country found themselves in a position where they were cut off from a supply of food and water, so Bakehouse made it a responsibility to ensure these people are reached.

However, the team are also very conscious of their efforts not impacting the future of the business and have been reaching out to suppliers to ask for help. Makievska, Owner of Bakehouse, explained that the largest expenditure for them is currently the staff cost, but due to the efforts the bakers go to, risking their lives in a currently unpredictable environment, she feels it is important to keep them and their families living and consequently set up a GoFundMe page to support this.

Although the ingredients and products are key for the bakery, equipment is another large concern that the Bakehouse have been faced with. The bakery had to move the production back to an old basement venue, but with a lot of old machinery, the process is not as efficient for the team, especially with the major necessity for extra produce.

Following Makievska’s efforts to reach businesses abroad and ask for support, Brook Food & Bakery Equipment were inspired by their bravery and donated a spiral mixer, which was a key piece required by the team.

The efforts continue today by the Bakehouse team as the country continues to stay strong, rebuilding their home in Ukraine.

Ann Wells, Commercial Director at Brook Food explained, “Everyone at Brook cannot begin to express their admiration to the bravery shown by Bakehouse, who not only continue to run their business, but also aid those in need in such unprecedented times. It has really been an honour to make this contribution to your hard work.”
